Overview

Biochar is a stable, highly porous form of carbon made by heating biomass with little or no oxygen. Its pore structure holds water and nutrients and gives soil microbes somewhere to live. A large share of its carbon stays in the soil for a long time. Before field application, charge it with compost, slurry or a nutrient solution so it doesn't tie up nitrogen. Typical field rates are 1–10 t/ha, depending on soil and crop. Lab analysis for each batch (carbon content, H/C ratio, PAH, heavy metals) is available on request.
